"Sailing up the river"

We sail up the river

One of the most famous things associated with Odense River is probably the song “Sejle op ad åen”, which has become part of Danish cultural heritage. This song was first performed in 1895 as part of the summer revue at Folketeatret. This theater is located just a few meters from Aafarten’s kiosk and the river itself.

The original song is about the trip, with Aafarten’s steamboats, up the river to the forest balls in Fruens Bøge and down the river again back to Munke Mose. The song has had several different versions of its lyrics. What we sing at gatherings today is a shortened version of the song.

Sailing on Odense River since 1882

Since 1882, sailing has been part of the Odense River’s DNA. This is when the steamboats on the river became a reality. The upper middle class went on picnics or to forest balls out in Fruens Bøge. At this time, the easiest way to get from Munke Mose to Fruens Bøge was by boat. Odense Aafart was therefore established in 1882 to meet the demand. It was soon realized that rowing up the river was hard and tiring, so in 1883 the first steamboat “Kvik” was introduced.
